The Zebra FXR90 is a rugged, outdoor ready RFID reader equipped with built in GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular connectivity (SIM card required) along with 2 integrated antennas. This article covers how to use the FXR90’s GPS feature with ClearStream RFID, along with common use cases where GPS enabled tag tracking improves workflow.
Setup in ClearStream
Connect the FXR90 to the network (LAN, Wi-Fi or cellular).
In ClearStream, add the reader to your project by opening the Device Configuration dialog then click Add->Zebra IOT Connector
Enter IP address/Hostname of FXR90
Select the Device tab and scroll down to GPS section,
Enable GPS and set the Refresh Interval to your preferred frequency (in milliseconds)
Close the Device Options dialog
Select a Destination to send the tag data to. The included Microsoft Access database is a good choice for testing. When using this destination, select the RFID Tag List table from the Table drop down.
Configure the Field Mappings. If using the included Microsoft Access database, click the 'Set to Defaults' toolbar button in the Field Mappings section.
Finally, click on the Start/Stop menu option and Start the reader, GPS data will now be attached to each read.
Common Use Cases
Mobile Inventory Audits
Use the FXR90 on a mobile cart or truck to scan inventory at multiple storage sites. Each inventory scan is tagged with the GPS location, so audits can be matched to physical locations with accuracy.
Construction or Utility Site Equipment Audits
Install the FXR90 on vehicles or trailers that move between remote job sites. GPS tagged reads verify that equipment is at the correct location, reducing loss.
Fleet Management and Route Optimization
Use GPS tagged RFID reads to monitor which assets are loaded on which trucks, and track vehicle routes for efficiency.
Emergency Response Vehicles
Ambulances or fire trucks equipped with FXR90 track critical equipment on board and send location tagged data in real time.
Event and Venue Asset Tracking
For large outdoor events or construction of temporary venues, use GPS enabled FXR90 units on vehicles to scan and track assets moving across wide areas.
